Mint

Mint is the most cooling note in perfumery and one of the few ingredients that smells the same after distillation as it does in the leaf. India is the world's largest producer of mint oil, with most coming from Uttar Pradesh and Punjab. Two species dominate: peppermint, which is sharper and more medicinal, and spearmint, which is sweeter and more herbal. The cooling sensation comes from menthol, which fools the body's cold receptors. By Vedic logic, mint is Mercury: clean, communicative, breath-related, mentally clarifying. There is no other planet that captures mint's clarity. Mint is the rarest of perfume notes precisely because it is hard to use without smelling like mouthwash. The best mint perfumes use it sparingly, as a lift in the opening. On skin it reads as refreshment, energy, slight wit. Wear it in summer, during travel, in tropical climates. Pairs with basil, vetiver, lavender, and citrus.
